Lubricating oil system

In the name of Allah who is the most beneficient and merciful
Lubricating oil system:
In the lub oil system, oil os supplied to all bearing, pistons cooilng, sprayer, exhaust vv, actuators, controlled system,
guides, gears , chain drivers , and ( cycinder in trunk piston engines). lay out of lubricating system for a large main engine is
shown in the sketch.
lub oil presssure pumps draws oil form engine drain tank (sump tank) through suction strainer and discharge through fine filter
to enigne and distributed to bearings, pisotns, and other parts as mentioned above.
Pressure pumps , strainers and filters are in duplicate, one set is being used while other acts as a standby. Fine filter
should be capable to clean the oil without interupption flow of oil.(mesh size 50 microns).

Maintenance of diesel engines

In the name of Allah who is the most merciful the beneficient

The reliability and safe working of the marine diesel engine depends upon the technical staff
and in particular upon sea going engineers.

Planned maintenance of marine machinery can prolong its life. Engine builders, pumps makers, in
shorts, all the makers of equipment in ship provide instructions about the regular care and
maintenance to be given to their equipment, with this information and knowing the continuous
survey requirements, the chief engineer plans the voyages maintenance work.

On board ship every engineer is delegated with the responsibilty for the efficient running and
maintenance of various items of machinery. Duties and responsilibilty are clearly defined and are
not to be left in any uncertainity.

General maintenance instruction

1. Trained and qualified personnel must be operate diesel engine only. unauthorized people must not be
allowed to operate the engine.

2. A log book should be kept for each engine, in which all important data and work concerning
the engine for example number of runing hours each day actual fuel consumption, intervals b/w oil changes
pressure and temperature of engine and general performance remarks.

3. The safety regulation and instructions concerning safety measures to be observed during operation
maintenance and repair work.

4. All essential parts of engine should be overhauled and cleaned at regular interval as per maker's
maintenance schedule. In order to keep engine good condition and constant operational readiness.

5. A parts from other factors the frequently overhauled of various engine parts are determined by the grade of
fuel and lubricating oil used.

Piston cooling water system

The cooling medium for the pistons varies with different engines, it may be frsh water, distilled water or lub. oil.
This system is indepentdent of the jacket system. The circulating pump draws water from a drain tank, passing it through
a cooler to the pisotn cooling inlet glands . cooling returns pass through sight glasses and thermometers before flowing
by gravity to drain tank. A heating coil fitted in the drain tank allows heating when warming of the engine is required
before starting the main engine.

Duties of a Trainee Engineer

In the name of Allah who is the most beneficient, the most merciful

Upon assignment to a ship, the trainee engineer should report to the second engineer who will introduce him to the chief engineer and master.

He will take a thorough round of the engine room with duty engineer o f the day, noting with care the general layout of the machinery, workshop, stores, making sure that he is familiar with bilge, sanitary, domestic fresh water and oils pumping/transferring arrangements. He will acquaint himself with all the routine followed by the ship and will apply himself diligently to his duties, carrying out the orders of the senior engineers/officers as desired or instructed.

He will be given work at the discretion of the 2nd engineer/duty engineer. He will ensure that machinery is kept in clean and serviceable condition. He may also be appointed as assistant watch keeper at sea or in port in any watch on discretion of the chief engineer/second engineer.

He shall inform anything unusual in working of machinery while on watch at sea/port to second engineer. He shall write log book neatly and tidily when asked to do so.

Trainee engineers on being assigned to a ship will be given a period of time for shipboard familiarization as required by regulation 1/14 (1.4) o f the STCW convention during which they shall get an opportunity to become acquainted with ships equipment, safety, environmental and emergency procedures. They shall also thoroughly read and understand the SMS/SOLAS safety and training manuals provided on board the vessel.

The trainee engineer shall familiarize himself with the filing/recording and or communicating the checks lists, reports.

Turning gear

The turning gear is a mechanism turn a diesel engine. It consists of a reversible electric motor which drives a worm gear which is connected with the toothed flywheel. The motor’s drive moves the flywheel thus turning the large diesel engine in the desired direction.

A slow speed drive of the electrical motor provides positioning of the engine parts for overhauling.

The turning gear is also used to turn the engine one or two revoltions prior to starting. This is safety checks to ensure that the engine is free to turn and that no water has collected in the cylinders. The indicators cocks must always be open when the turning gear is operated.

Unatttended machinery spaces
The sophistication of modern control system and the reliability of the equipment used have resulted in machinery spaces remaining
unattended for long periods. In order to ensure the safety of the ship and its equipment during ums operation certain essential
requirement must be meet.
1. Bridge control:
A control system to operate the main machinery must be provided on bridge .
instrumentation providing certain basic info must be provided.
2. Machinery control room:
A centralized control room must be provided with the equipment to operate all main and auxillary easily accessible.
3. Alarm and fire protection :
An alarm system is required which must be comprehension in coverage of the equipment and able to provide warning in the control,
machinery space, the accomodation and on the bridge. A fire detection and alarm system, which operates rapidly, must also the
provided outside the machinery space with facilities for control of emergency.
4. Emergency power:
Automatic provision of electric power to meet the varying loads requirement. A means of providing emergency electrical power
and essential lighting must be provided. This is usually met by the automatic start up of a standby generator.

Diesel engine fresh water cooling system

Diesel engine fresh water cooling system:

slow and medium speed engine use fresh water to circulate and cool the cylinder jacket covers,
pistons, exhaust valves(if fitted) and turbocharger as these parts subjected to work under high
temperature and pressure conditions, cooling is required to prevent the overheating of these parts
fresh water is most common medium employed. fresh water may cause the deposits of salt on
heated surfaces resulting pitted and corrosion and pitting circulating water is cooled in the
cooler by passing sea water in the coolers.

jacket cooling water system:

This system forms closed circuit water passing from the engine returns through cooler to pump
suction and then back to engine. A header and expansion tank is placed at a reasonable height
to allow venting and pressurizing of the system. This is connected to both the engine discharge
and the pump suction line. A heater is included with a bypass and the system can warm the engine
when necessary.

cooling water enters at the lower end of the cylinder jackets passing upto connection from the
top of the jacket to the cyclinder covers and the exhaust valves( if fitted). A restricted
amount of water is taken from this discharge and passes through turbocharger cooling spaces

Crankcase explosion relief valve

As a practical safe guard against crankcase explosion relief valves or doors are fitted. These valves serve to relieve excessive crankcase pressures and stop flames being emitted from the crankcase. The cause of crankcase explosion is a “hot spot” resulting due to hot running bearing or any other overheated machinery part. In normal condition air in crankcase contains oil droplets and if these oil droplets will come into contact of a hot spot it will be vaporized and will form explosive oil mist. Regulation demands that for engines of over 300 mm bore, one crankcase relief valves is fitted to each crankcase and chain drive casing. Figure shows a crank case relief valve is fitted to diesel engine crank case. It consists of a light spring loaded non return disc valve of simple construction. The valve disc is of aluminum alloy which reduces its mass and the inertia to be overcome when opening or closing valve rapidly. The large “diameter” light spring holds the valve closed against its seat. The valve landing must make a gas and oil tight seal when closed and a nonstick oil and heat resisting rubber ring is fitted to the disc face. A deflector is fitted on the outside of the engine to safeguard personnel from the out flowing gases, an inside the engine, other valve opening, and oil wetted gauze acts as a flame trap to stop any flames leaving the crank case after operation the valve will close automatically under the action of the spring. When wet with oil the gauze dissipated heat at greater rate and become more effective as a flame trap.

The valve spring is designed to allow the valve open under an internal pressure of approximately 5 KW/M2 and will close automatically when pressure has been relieved.

Crank case doors should be robust(determined) to prevent damages or rupture(break or burst suddenly) before relief valves operate to relieve pressure valves will required little maintenance but should be tested periodically by hand, the spring should be inspected and the guaze cleaned.

Fresh water may cause the deposits of salt on heated surfaces resulting pitting and corrosion hence chemical additives are added in the circulating water is cooled and pitting. circulating water is cooled in the coolers by passing sea water in sea coolers.

Microbial degradation of oil

Microbial degration of oil is the possible infection of an oil system by micro organisms. these live
by consuming hydrocarbons in the base oil togather with nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus from additives.
if water is present they will multiply rapidly in the warm, agitated conditions in the oil system. contamins is
humids climates or accidental entry of dirt and water during overhaul.

infection by microorganisms will form organic acids and more water while depleting the additives. This will cause
corrosions and wear of metal surfaces(particularly bearing metals) and will create sludge and slime that choke oil filters.
The oil may be prone to emulsification and saponification.

Test for microbial infection make use of a special gel which is either dipped in the oil or has oil poured over it and is then
incubated to develop a growth or culture. the appearance of this culture is then compared visually with a standard coloured
chart, to indicate the degree of contamination if any. If the oil doesnot wet the get, it may be necessary to mix the sample with a
small quantity of sterile water.

contamination doesnot commonly occur if cleanliness and care are exercised and water is eliminated from the sytem. Recommendations are that a
maximum of 0.2 % of water content must not be exceeded when using detergent oils.
